About SMHI
SMHI employs about 500 people. The headquarters is in Norrköping. Regional offices are also placed in Malmö, Göteborg, Sundsvall, Arlanda and Åbo, Finland. SMHI doesn't only provide information to the media for weather reporting, it also alarms the Swedish authorities when there is a risk of storm weather. Power companies subscribe to reports and weather forcasts to assist in calculations of water storage which directly relates to electricity pricing. Airports and farmers are other typical examples of groups who depend on SMHI's wind and weather reports.
Faster logins with Nordic Edge™ Identity Manager gives SMHI more time for the weather
The employees at SMHI (Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute) needed up to ten different identity codes to gain access to the information stored within different systems. With Nordic Edge™ Identity Manager SMHI simplified password management and increased security radically.
The Challenge
Like many other companies, SMHI relies on a mixed platform environment (VMS, Unix, Solaris, True 64, Linux and Windows). The staff at SMHI had up to ten different access codes to access the information stored in the different systems. The goal of SMHI was to minimize the number of system platforms and focus on Linux and Windows, reducing the number of passwords and simultaneously raise the level of security.
The Solution
In order to manage the administration and reduce the number of passwords SMHI chose to install the Nordic Edge™ Identity Manager, used as a common interface to manage users and access codes regardless of system.
The Result
With the new identity system SMHI has done the ground work for reducing the number of passwords while also increasing the level of security. SMHI will save users and administrators both time and money.
"We will save many hours of administration every week, and eliminate the problems of employees and customers who forget their passwords after summer vacations", says Jan Svensson, project leader of IT Systems at SMHI in Norrköping.
